Harbor Patrol

Boat Operators Training:

The Beaufort Police Department takes water and boating safety very serious.  The Department has eight certified police boat operators. The training begins with the officer attending the Power Squadron's basic boater's class. The officer then attends a forty-hour class presented by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, "Marine Law Enforcement." This class involves boater's safety,  boat handling, trailering, BUI, equipment and registration laws, boarding, wake violations and search and rescue coordination. Four of the eight officers have continued their boating education by receiving their license from the U.S. Coast Guard (Master 25 ton near coastal).  Several other officers have their U.S.C.G. license.

Many of our missions include;

  • Overdue/stranded boaters
  • Persons threatening to jump off bridges
  • Boating accidents
  • Wake violations
  • Drownings
  • Submerged objects
  • BUI/Alcohol Enforcement
  • Pro-Active Patrol
